Math 150 is a survey of the basic tools of calculus as they are used primarily in business and economics.  The material we will cover ranges from derivatives and rates of change to integration and probability.  The prerequisite for the course is a C or better in Math 124, 126 or 129 or a score of 580 on the Math SAT or 25 on the Math ACT.  If you do not satisfy one of these conditions you will be dropped from the course.

• Exam I Information
  • The first exam is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb 1 in the IML Computer Lab on the 2nd floor of Armstrong Hall.  It will cover Sections 1.1 to 1.9 and 2.1 to 2.2 of the text.  Problems for the exam will be similar (but not exactly like in all cases!) to the recommended exercises posted in the Course Syllabus. Problems from Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 on the WebCT site for the course are also good examples.  Topics will include
    • Algebra Review

      • algebra of functions (composition, etc.)
      • zeroes of functions
      • exponents
      • compound interest
      • rates of change
      • exponential growth and decay
      • applications of functions
    • Calculus Concepts
    • the derivative as a rate of change of a function

• Exam II
  • The second exam is scheduled for Wednesday, March 1 in the IML lab.  It will cover Sections 2.3-2.5, Chap 3 and 4.1 to 4.2 from the text.  Topics will include
    • Derivatives
      • increasing and decreasing functions
      • concavity and the second derivative
      • rules for differentiation (generalized power rule, etc.)
      • derivatives of polynomials, exponentials and logarithms
      • the second derivative
      • Product Rule
      • Quotient Rule
      • Chain Rule, the Generalized Power Rule and Related Rates
        
  • the exam will be given in the IML lab
  • You are not allowed to use cellphones or pagers and you are not allowed to use Derive on the lab computers during the exam.  No notes are allowed other than the formula sheet provided in the exam as a hyperlink. Accessing information from websites or other students is prohibited and violations of this will be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.
  • you will need to bring a picture ID to the exam

  • work the HW exercises from each section first; try to connect what you are doing with what you saw in class and what is in your notes.
    
• Exam III
  • The third exam is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5 in the IML lab. It will cover Sections 4.3-4.6, Chap 5 and 7.1 from the text.

  • Graphing calculators and devices that have a computer style keyboard (TI-92, laptop, or other PDA type device that holds notes), cellphones or pagers and you are not allowed to use Derive on the lab computers during the exam.  No notes are allowed other than the formula sheet provided in the exam as a hyperlink. Accessing information from websites or other students is prohibited and violations of this will be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.  You may use the online calculator or a handheld scientific calculator such as the TI-30II
